Creating Goals

Walk through the goal wizard: pick a kind, pick what to track, and set your numbers

Creating a goal takes under a minute. You'll answer two questions: what kind of goal, and what it should track, then fill in the details.

Starting the wizard

  1. Go to Planning › Goals.
  2. Select the Add a goal tile at the end of your goals. (If you have no goals yet, choose Set a spending limit or Set a target straight from the Goals page.)
  1. Go to Planning › Goals.
  2. Tap + New Goal below your goals. (If you have no goals yet, choose Set a spending limit or Set a target straight from the Goals page.)

Members with a Read Only role can view goals but not create them. See Understanding Roles.

Step 1. What kind of goal?

  • Limit, stay under an amount over a period you choose.
  • Target, reach an amount; runs until you get there.

Not sure which? Understanding Goals explains the difference.

Step 2. What should it track?

  • Category, spending in a budget category. Picking a parent category includes all of its subcategories.
  • Tag: transactions carrying a tag, across every account. A goal tracks a single tag.
  • Account balance, a milestone in one account. Available for targets only: balances aren't cumulative spend, so they can't back a limit.

Select Continue to fill in the details.

The details form

  • Goal name (just Name on iPhone): whatever motivates you: "Holiday", "Pay off credit card", "House fund".
  • Spending limit or Target amount, the number that defines the goal. For balance goals, the target can be zero or negative (paying a debt down to $0).
  • Dates, limits and balance goals need a start and end date; category and tag targets can add an optional aim date. Adding a date is what unlocks pace tracking, Financio can then tell you the monthly amount you need.
  • Your pace: once you've picked a category or tag and an amount, Financio shows what your dates work out to per month, alongside what you've actually averaged this year. It's an honest gut-check before you commit: a $50,000 Travel limit reads as "That's $4,167/month to stay under. You've averaged $726/month so far this year."
  • Banner image & description, optional; add a photo of the thing you're saving for.

Select Create goal and it starts tracking immediately, including everything you've already recorded within its date range.

Editing a goal

Open the goal and select Edit.

On iPhone, open the goal, tap in the top right, and choose Edit. (You can also long-press a goal card in the list and pick Edit.)

You can rename the goal, change the amount, move the end date (life happens: pushing the date out recalculates your pace), and update the image or description. Two things are locked after creation:

  • What the goal tracks: the category, tag or account. To track something else, create a new goal.
  • A balance goal's start date. It anchors the starting balance your progress is measured from.

Deleting a goal

Deleting is permanent and lives at the bottom of the edit form (on iPhone you'll also find Delete in the menu on the goal's page). If a goal simply finished its job, consider archiving instead. See Tracking Progress.
