Managing Household Members

How to view, update, and remove members from your household

As the household Owner, you have full control over who can access your financial data. This guide covers how to manage your household members.

Owner Only

Only the household Owner can manage members. If you have Full Access or Read Only permissions, you can view the member list but cannot make changes.

Viewing Current Members

  1. Click your profile icon in the top right corner and select Settings.

  2. In the Settings sidebar, click Household Members.

  3. You'll see a list of all current members showing:

    • Member name and email
    • Their role (Owner, Full Access, or Read Only)
    • When they joined
    • When they last accessed the household

Changing a Member's Role

To upgrade or downgrade a member's access:

  1. Find the member in the list
  2. Click the role dropdown next to their name
  3. Select the new role:
    • Full Access - Can view and edit everything
    • Read Only - Can view but not make changes
  4. The change takes effect immediately

Role Changes Are Instant

When you change someone's role, they'll see the new permissions immediately. If downgraded to Read Only, any edit buttons they could see will disappear.

Removing a Member

To remove someone from your household:

  1. Find the member in the list
  2. Click the Remove button (or trash icon)
  3. Confirm the removal when prompted

Once removed:

  • They immediately lose access to your household
  • They cannot see any of your data
  • They're notified via email that they've been removed
  • They can no longer switch to your household

Removal Is Immediate

There's no grace period. Once you remove someone, they lose access instantly. You can invite them again later if needed.

What Members Can See

All members, regardless of role, can see:

  • All accounts and their balances
  • Every transaction across all accounts
  • Your complete category structure
  • All tags you've created
  • All automation rules
  • All financial goals
  • All reports and insights

There's no way to hide specific accounts or transactions from members. Sharing is all-or-nothing.

Member Activity

The member list shows when each person last accessed the household. This helps you:

  • See who's actively using Financio
  • Identify members who may no longer need access
  • Understand usage patterns

Best Practices

Regular Access Reviews

Periodically review your member list to ensure:

  • Everyone who has access still needs it
  • Roles are appropriate for each member's needs
  • Former partners, moved-out family members, or ex-advisors are removed

Start with Read Only

If you're unsure what level of access someone needs, start with Read Only. You can always upgrade to Full Access later if they need to make changes.

Communicate Changes

Before changing someone's role or removing them, consider letting them know. This avoids confusion and maintains trust.

Pending Invitations

Below the member list, you'll see any pending invitations. From here you can:

  • See who has been invited but hasn't responded
  • Check when invitations were sent
  • Revoke invitations if you change your mind

See Inviting Members for details on sending and managing invitations.

Troubleshooting

I can't change roles or remove members

Only the Owner can manage members. If you have Full Access, you can view the list but not make changes.

A member can still see data after removal

They may have cached data in their browser. Once they refresh or try to access any data, they'll be blocked.

I accidentally removed someone

Send them a new invitation. They'll need to accept it to regain access.

I want to transfer ownership

Ownership cannot be transferred. If you need someone else to be the Owner, you'll need to export your data and have them create a new account with that data.
