Filtering Reports

Customise your reports by filtering accounts, categories, tags, merchants, and amounts

All reports in Financio share a powerful filtering system that lets you drill down into exactly the data you want to see. Whether you want to analyse spending from a specific account, focus on particular categories, or find transactions within a certain amount range, filters give you complete control.

Accessing Filters

Click the Filters button in the report header to open the filter panel. A small indicator dot appears on the button when filters are active.

The filter panel shows how many filters are currently applied (e.g., "3 filters selected") and lets you configure each filter type using a tabbed interface.

Filter Types

Accounts

Control which accounts are included in the report.

  • Toggle each account on or off using the slide switches
  • Each account shows its current balance for reference
  • Accounts with "Include in Net Worth" disabled appear greyed out and cannot be selected (enable this in the account settings first)

Use case: View expenses from just your credit card, or see income to a specific bank account.

Categories

Filter by expense or income categories.

  • Select All — Toggle all categories at once
  • Uncategorised — Include transactions that haven't been assigned a category
  • Categories are shown hierarchically (parent categories with their subcategories indented below)
  • Toggling a parent category automatically toggles all its subcategories

Use case: Focus on discretionary spending by excluding essential categories like rent and utilities.

Merchants

Filter by where you've spent money or received income.

  • Select All — Toggle all merchants at once
  • No Merchant — Include transactions without a merchant name
  • Merchants are listed alphabetically

Use case: Analyse spending at specific retailers, or exclude certain merchants from reports.

Tags

Filter by custom tags you've applied to transactions.

  • Untagged — Include transactions without any tags
  • Each tag shows its colour for easy identification

Use case: View only transactions tagged "Business" for tax reporting, or focus on holiday spending.

Amount

Filter by transaction amounts.

OptionDescription
Greater thanOnly transactions above the specified amount
Less thanOnly transactions below the specified amount
Equal toOnly transactions matching the exact amount
BetweenTransactions within a range (e.g., $50 to $200)

Use case: Find large purchases over $500, or focus on small recurring charges under $20.

Applying Filters

The filter panel uses a draft system—your changes aren't applied until you confirm them:

  1. Make your filter selections
  2. Click Apply to update the report with your filters
  3. Or click Cancel to discard changes
  4. Click Clear to reset all filters to their defaults (all items selected)

This lets you experiment with different filter combinations without affecting the current view until you're ready.

Combining Filters

Filters work together using AND logic:

  • A transaction must match all active filters to appear
  • For example, filtering by "Credit Card" account AND "Food & Drink" category shows only food spending on your credit card
  • Within each filter type, items use OR logic (selecting "Coffee" and "Restaurants" shows transactions from either)

Saving Filter Configurations

If you frequently use the same filter combinations, you can save them as named reports. Click the Save button (bookmark icon) after setting up your filters, give it a name, and load it instantly anytime from the Saved Reports dropdown.

For detailed information on saving, loading, and managing saved reports, see Saving Reports.

Filter Availability by Report

Different reports support different filter types based on what makes sense for that report:

ReportAccountsCategoriesMerchantsTagsAmount
Net WorthYes
Cash FlowYesYesYesYesYes
ExpensesYesYesYesYesYes
IncomeYesYesYesYesYes

The Net Worth report only supports account filtering because it tracks balances rather than individual transactions.

Clearing Filters

To remove all filters and see complete data:

  1. Open the filter panel
  2. Click Clear at the bottom left
  3. All filters reset to include everything
  4. Click Apply to update the report

Alternatively, if you've saved a filtered report and want to return to the unfiltered view, simply navigate away and back to the report page.

Tips for Effective Filtering

Start Broad, Then Narrow

Begin with all data visible, then progressively add filters to focus on specific areas of interest.

Check the Filter Indicator

The dot on the Filters button reminds you when filters are active. If numbers seem lower than expected, check if filters are applied.

Use Categories for Budget Analysis

Filter to specific expense categories to compare month-over-month spending in areas like dining out or entertainment.

Combine Tags and Categories

Tags add another dimension beyond categories. Use categories for the type of expense (e.g., "Food & Drink") and tags for the purpose (e.g., "Business", "Holiday").
