Leaving a Household

How to leave a shared household you no longer need access to

If you no longer need access to a household you've been invited to, you can leave at any time. This removes your access without affecting anyone else's data.

Before You Leave

Consider these points before leaving a household:

  • Your access ends immediately - You won't be able to see any of that household's data
  • You can't undo this yourself - You'll need a new invitation to rejoin
  • The owner is notified - They'll know you've left
  • Your own data is unaffected - Only your access to the shared household changes

Your Data Stays Safe

Leaving a shared household doesn't affect your own household or any data you own. It only removes your access to someone else's data.

How to Leave a Household

  1. Make sure you're viewing the household you want to leave (use the household switcher if needed)

  2. Click your profile icon in the top right corner and select Settings

  3. In the Settings sidebar, click Household Members

  4. At the bottom of the page, click Leave This Household

  5. Confirm that you want to leave

After confirming, you'll be redirected to your own household (or another household you still have access to).

Leave household button at the bottom of the members page

What Happens When You Leave

When you leave a household:

  • Your access is revoked immediately
  • You can no longer see that household in your household switcher
  • The owner sees that you've left the household
  • None of the household's data is affected
  • Your own household and data remain unchanged

Owners Cannot Leave

If you're the Owner of a household, you cannot leave it. The Owner is permanently associated with their household.

If you want to stop using Financio entirely, you would need to:

  1. Remove all other members from your household
  2. Delete your Financio account

Rejoining After Leaving

If you leave and later want to rejoin:

  1. Contact the household owner
  2. Ask them to send you a new invitation
  3. Accept the invitation as you did originally

The owner can choose to grant you the same role you had before, or a different one.

Common Reasons to Leave

The shared arrangement has ended

Relationships change. If you no longer share finances with someone, leaving their household keeps things clean.

You no longer need visibility

Perhaps you had Read Only access to help a family member, and they no longer need your assistance.

Simplifying your view

If you have access to many households, leaving ones you don't actively use simplifies your household switcher.

Privacy preferences

You may decide you'd rather not have visibility into someone else's finances.

Troubleshooting

I can't find the Leave button

The Leave button only appears when you're viewing a household where you're not the Owner. Make sure you've switched to the correct household first.

I left by mistake

Contact the household owner and ask them to send a new invitation. They can see that you left and can re-invite you.

The owner won't re-invite me

Unfortunately, the owner has full control over who can access their household. If they choose not to re-invite you, there's no way to regain access.

I still see the household in my switcher

Try refreshing the page or signing out and back in. The household should disappear from your list once the page fully reloads.
