How to accept or decline a household invitation

When someone invites you to their Financio household, you'll receive an email with a link to accept or decline. Here's what to expect and how to respond.

Receiving an Invitation

When you're invited to a household, you'll receive an email containing:

  • The name of the person inviting you
  • The role being offered (Full Access or Read Only)
  • A brief explanation of what each role means
  • Links to accept or decline

Check Your Spam Folder

If you're expecting an invitation but haven't received it, check your spam or junk folder. You can also ask the person to resend it.

Accepting the Invitation

If You Already Have a Financio Account

  1. Click the Accept Invitation link in the email
  2. You'll be taken to Financio - sign in if prompted
  3. Review the invitation details
  4. Click Accept to join the household

Once accepted, you'll have immediate access to the shared household. Your existing Financio data remains separate and private.

If You're New to Financio

  1. Click the Accept Invitation link in the email
  2. You'll be prompted to create a Financio account
  3. Complete the registration process
  4. The invitation is automatically accepted when you finish registration

You'll then have access to the shared household. You can also create your own separate household later if you want to track personal finances independently.

What Happens When You Accept

When you accept an invitation:

  • You gain immediate access to the household's data
  • You can see all accounts, transactions, categories, tags, and reports
  • Your permissions are determined by the role you were assigned
  • If you have Full Access, you can start making changes right away
  • The household owner is notified that you've joined

You'll See Everything

Accepting an invitation gives you full visibility into the household's financial data. Make sure you're comfortable with this before accepting.

Declining the Invitation

If you don't want to join the household:

  1. Click the Decline Invitation link in the email
  2. Confirm that you want to decline

The person who invited you will be notified that you declined. They can send a new invitation later if circumstances change.

After Accepting

Switching to the New Household

If you already had your own Financio account, you'll now have access to multiple households. After accepting:

  1. Look for the household switcher in the header
  2. Click it to see all households you can access
  3. Select the household you want to view

Understanding Your Role

Your role determines what you can do:

  • Full Access - You can view and edit everything except manage members
  • Read Only - You can view everything but cannot make changes

Invitation Expiration

Invitations expire after 7 days. If you try to accept an expired invitation:

  • You'll see a message that the invitation has expired
  • Ask the person to send a new invitation
  • Check your email for a newer invitation that may have been sent

Troubleshooting

The link doesn't work

  • The invitation may have expired (7 days)
  • The invitation may have been revoked
  • Try copying the full URL from the email rather than clicking

I accepted but can't see the household

  • Try refreshing the page
  • Sign out and sign back in
  • Check the household switcher - you may need to select it

I want to join with a different account

If you accidentally accepted with the wrong account:

  1. Contact the household owner
  2. Ask them to remove you
  3. Sign in with your preferred account
  4. Ask for a new invitation to be sent to that email

I changed my mind after declining

If you declined but now want to join:

  1. Contact the person who invited you
  2. Ask them to send a new invitation
  3. Accept the new invitation
