Sharing Your Finances with Family: Introducing Multi-User Access

Now you can share your Financio household with family members, giving them full visibility or edit access to manage finances together

Managing household finances has always been easier when everyone's on the same page. Whether you share expenses with a partner, help an elderly parent track their spending, or want your adult children to understand the family budget, having a single source of truth makes life simpler. That's why we're excited to introduce multi-user access in Financio.

One Household, Multiple Users

Until now, each Financio account was strictly personal. If a couple wanted to manage finances together, one person would share their login credentials (not ideal) or they'd each maintain separate accounts (missing the point of shared finances).

With multi-user access, you can invite family members to your household. They log in with their own credentials, see all your financial data, and—depending on the access level you grant—can help manage transactions, categories, and accounts alongside you.

Three Levels of Access

We've designed a simple permission system that covers the most common scenarios:

Owner

You're the Owner of your household—the person who created the account. Owners have complete control: full access to all data plus the ability to invite and manage other members.

Full Access

Perfect for a partner or spouse who actively manages finances with you. Full Access members can:

  • View all accounts, transactions, and reports
  • Add and edit transactions
  • Manage categories, tags, and automation rules
  • Create and track financial goals

They can do everything you can, except invite or remove other members.

Read Only

Ideal for family members who need visibility without the ability to make changes. Read Only members can browse your complete financial picture—accounts, transactions, spending breakdowns, reports—without accidentally (or intentionally) modifying anything.

This is particularly useful when:

  • A parent wants to help an adult child learn about budgeting
  • An adult child is helping elderly parents review their finances
  • You want a financial advisor to see your data without editing it

Real Scenarios, Real Benefits

Couples Managing Money Together

"Who paid the electricity bill?" "Did you already categorise that restaurant charge?" These questions disappear when both partners have access to the same data. Add a transaction from your phone, and your partner sees it immediately. No more double-entry or wondering if an expense was recorded.

Helping Parents with Finances

As parents age, managing finances can become overwhelming. With Read Only access, you can review their accounts regularly, spot unusual charges, and have informed conversations—all while they maintain control of their money.

Teaching Kids About Money

Want your older teenagers or young adults to understand household expenses? Read Only access lets them see real numbers: how much the mortgage costs, what utilities add up to, where the food budget goes. It's financial education with real data.

Financial Advisor Reviews

If you work with a financial advisor or accountant, granting them Read Only access saves time. They can review your spending patterns, see your category breakdowns, and come to meetings prepared—without you needing to export spreadsheets or explain your system.

Privacy and Control

We've built multi-user access with clear boundaries:

Complete visibility — Members see everything in your household. There's no selective sharing or hiding specific accounts. This transparency is intentional: shared finances work best when everyone sees the same picture.

Instant revocation — If circumstances change, removing a member immediately cuts off their access. There's no grace period, no lingering visibility.

Activity tracking — See when each member last accessed your household. Useful for knowing who's actively engaged and who might no longer need access.

Separate households — Users can belong to multiple households. Your partner might have their own personal finances plus access to your shared household. A family member helping elderly parents doesn't merge their data with anyone else's.

How to Get Started

Sharing your household takes just a few steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Household Members
  2. Click Invite Member
  3. Enter their email address and choose their access level
  4. They'll receive an email with a link to accept

If they already have a Financio account, they can accept with their existing login. If not, they'll create an account as part of accepting the invitation.

Coming Soon

This is just the beginning of multi-user features. We're already planning:

  • Household naming — Give your shared household a custom name instead of defaulting to the owner's name
  • Notification preferences — Choose what updates members receive about household activity
  • Role requests — Let Read Only members request an upgrade to Full Access

Your Finances, Shared Your Way

Whether you're combining finances with a partner, helping family members, or simply want a second pair of eyes on your spending, multi-user access makes it possible. You stay in control, everyone stays informed, and managing household finances becomes a team effort.

Ready to invite someone? Head to Settings > Household Members and send your first invitation.
